Industrial Visit to Hero MotoCorp: An Insightful Learning Experience

PGDM and MBA students recently had the opportunity to visit the manufacturing plant of Hero MotoCorp, one of the world’s leading two-wheeler manufacturers. The visit offered a valuable glimpse into real-world manufacturing and business operations, aligning theoretical knowledge with practical insights.

One of the key highlights of the visit was vertical integration, a strategy where Hero manages multiple stages of the value chain internally—from sourcing raw materials to final assembly. Students observed how this approach ensures better quality control, reduces operational costs, and allows for faster turnaround times. It also highlighted how vertical integration strengthens the company’s competitive edge by minimizing reliance on external suppliers.

The session also shed light on product development, where students learned about the stages involved in launching a new two-wheeler model. From market research and concept design to prototyping and testing, Hero’s innovation-driven approach was clearly visible. Emphasis on customer feedback and advanced engineering techniques underscored the importance of R&D in the company’s growth strategy.

Another interesting aspect was batch production, which allows Hero to produce motorcycles and scooters in smaller, flexible quantities. Students gained insights into how batch production supports customization and quality, while also ensuring efficient resource utilization. This approach is especially useful in adapting to varying market demands.

The most engaging part of the visit was observing the two-wheeler assembly line. The integration of automation and skilled labor reflected Hero’s commitment to precision and efficiency. Each stage—from engine installation to quality inspection—was systematically executed, showcasing best practices in lean manufacturing and operational excellence.

Overall, the industrial visit provided an enriching experience for management students. It allowed them to connect academic concepts with industrial realities, enhancing their understanding of supply chain management, operations, and strategic planning. The exposure to Hero MotoCorp’s world-class facility will undoubtedly help shape their perspective as future business leaders.
